Adult Orthodontics

Have your teeth moved since having braces during your teenage years? Did you miss out on the opportunity to have your smile straightened when you were younger?

Regardless of their age, many adults are now choosing to receive treatment either again or for the first time, because they understand the importance of maintaining their dental health, and they want to feel better about their appearance.

For our mature patients, aesthetics is a very important factor. There are many modern options for straightening your smile beyond the metal braces chosen by many of our younger patients.  These include clear braces, aligners, and lingual braces.  Our orthodontists will recommend the most ideal method and treatment option for you, so that you may keep enjoying your lifestyle during work, rest and play.

Adult Orthodontics FAQs

  • The short answer is: no. How we feel pain and discomfort is completely subjective and is different between individuals. Regardless of age, some patients report strong discomfort when treatment begins, while others experience almost no grief at all.

  • Yes, they will. The basic anatomical structure of teeth and their roots in the bone stays the same, but age may alter the quality of the bone, which in turn affects how fast or slow teeth move.

  • Most appointments are 15 to 30 minutes long, or even shorter if your treatment involves wearing aligners. If treatment is performed using braces, appointments are longest when they are being placed for the first time or when they are removed.

  • Teeth can shift and crowd up further as time passes, due to maturation changes in the jaw bones, and changes in the pressures acting on the teeth from the tongue, gums and lips. We cannot predict when or how much this will happen for anyone.

  • As teeth can always shift during life, regardless of age, it will still be recommended that you wear retainers after treatment as an adult. This will ensure long-term results and avoid re-treatment.
